Total knee replacement Surgery
You can't walk like you used to. The dog has trouble walking, climbing stairs, or getting up from a chair. You've tried medications, injections, and physical therapy. Nothing seems to work. If so, it may be time to consider knee replacement surgery and if you choose to have knee replacement surgery, you should also be aware of the types of surgery that your Surgeon surgery can do.
There are 5 main types of knee replacement surgery.
1. Total knee replacement: This is the most common form. Your surgeon will replace the surfaces of the femur and shin-bones that connect the knees.
2. Revision knee replacement: This procedure may be necessary if you have very severe arthritis or if you have already had two or three knee replacement surgeries.
3. Patellofemoral replacement: It only changes the bottom surface of the kneecap and the socket in which the kneecap sits. It can be very effective for people with chronic knee arthritis.
4. Cartilage restoration: Sometimes when there is only an isolated injury or damage to the knee, it is possible to replace the area with living cartilage grafts or cells grown into cartilage.
5. Partial knee replacement: If arthritis affects only one side of your knee, this surgery may be possible. However, this is only right for you if you have strong knee ligaments and the rest of the cartilage in the knee is normal. A partial knee replacement can be performed through a smaller incision than that required for a total knee replacement.
